Embraer ERJ 145

Embraer ERJ 145

The ERJ 145 belongs to the category of regional airliners and, produced by Embraer, is widely popular as a commercial aircraft thanks to its capacity to successfully combine reliability, durability and affordability. With a range of nearly 3,000 km and the ability to cater for up to 50 passengers in its standard configuration, Embraer's ERJ 145 is perfect for short-haul flights for large groups and represents a particularly suitable solution for the private flight requirements of sports teams and wedding parties, among others. Being a jet aircraft, the ERJ 145 cruises at a considerably greater speed than turboprop airliners, like the Fokker 50, for example, and offers a much quieter journey and a longer range. Overall, this aircraft provides an excellent service for large groups looking for an efficient and comfortable means of private transportation.

Development of the Embraer ERJ 145 was launched in 1989 as a turbofan-powered stretch of the existing EMB 120 Brasilia turboprop. The project faced an early setback in November 1990 when Brazilian government spending cuts forced Embraer to suspend development for six months.

Work resumed on a revised configuration during the early 1990s, with formal development beginning in 1995. The aircraft was first certified in 1996 and entered service later that year, establishing Embraer's presence in the regional jet market.

The ERJ 145 became the foundation for Embraer's business jet programmes, providing proven systems and performance characteristics. The aircraft's success in commercial aviation demonstrated the reliability that would later attract business aviation customers to the Legacy family.

With operational experience gained worldwide, the ERJ 145 platform proved its versatility and became the basis for various business jet derivatives. The aircraft established Embraer as a major player in regional aviation and set the stage for the company's expansion into business aviation.

Does the ERJ-145 have more range than the Saab 340?

Yes, the ERJ-145 offers significantly more range than the Saab 340. Whilst the Saab 340 has a range of approximately 1,700 km (918 nautical miles), the ERJ-145 can fly up to 2,871 km (1,550 nautical miles), providing airlines with greater route flexibility and the ability to serve longer regional connections.

What is the cruising speed of the ERJ-145?

The Embraer ERJ-145 cruises at 833 km/h (450 knots). This speed makes it well-suited for regional routes, allowing efficient connections between secondary cities whilst maintaining competitive travel times for distances up to 2,871 kilometres.

What is the maximum range of the ERJ-145, and which city pairs can it connect?

The ERJ-145 has a maximum range of approximately 2,871 km (1,550 nautical miles) under standard conditions. This range capability enables the aircraft to connect city pairs such as London to Athens or Madrid to Stockholm, making it ideal for European regional operations and North American transcontinental routes.

How many passengers can the ERJ-145 accommodate?

The ERJ-145 typically seats 50 passengers in a standard single-class configuration. The aircraft features a 2+1 seating arrangement, providing reasonable comfort for regional flights whilst maximising operational efficiency for airlines serving smaller markets.

What makes the ERJ-145's cabin design distinctive for a regional aircraft?

The ERJ-145 features a relatively spacious cabin for its category, with a cabin height of 1.82 metres (6 feet) and a 2+1 seating configuration that eliminates middle seats. This layout provides passengers with either a window or aisle seat, enhancing comfort on regional routes where aircraft size typically constrains passenger amenities.
