Airport History

Aerial view of the Geneva airport
Geneva airport continues to grow over the years

In 1920, Geneva International Airport began as a small airport. By 1940, the airport had built its first concrete-surface runway, and by 1949, it had constructed a big passenger terminal for roughly 300,000 passengers.

However, merely twenty years later, Geneva’s airport terminal had become highly insufficient, requiring extensive additions, bringing the total capacity to almost five million people per year. The year 1994 marked the airport’s full autonomy, and the year 1998 saw the completion of the airport’s charter terminal, two significant milestones in its history.
