The Vegetarian Festival
One of Phuket's largest festivals, the Vegetarian Festival (the Nine Emperor Gods Festival) is a local festival that comprises a number of rituals designed to purify the mind and body.
Held in November/December each year, the Patong carnival features lights, processions, dancing, music, street food, handicraft stalls and fireworks.
A celebration of thanks and gratitude for the gift of water, Loi Krathong is held on the night of the November full moon. Local people release hundreds of sky lanterns, as well as launch small boats made from banana skins and containing offerings such as candles, incense and flowers. Saphan Hin, on the periphery of Phuket City, is the most popular location for celebrating this amazing event.
