Steeped in over two centuries of Bavarian tradition, Oktoberfest, or "Wies'n" as the locals call it, is known as the world's largest beer festival, and also the largest Volksfest (folk festival) in the world. Held annually in Munich, Bavaria, in the heart of Germany, the event is attended by six million international and national visitors. Locally, it is called “d’Wiesn”, after the colloquial name for the fairgrounds, the 42-hectare Theresienwiese where the event takes place. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since the year 1810. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations that are modelled after the original Munich event.
