Last year’s F1 Championship was one of the most tightly-fought in Formula 1 history and this season looks to be no different. Mercedes won their first ever Constructor’s Championship, winning a record 16/19 races, including a staggering 11 one-two finishes. Lewis Hamilton lifted the driver’s championship trophy for the second time, bringing to an end Sebastian Vettel’s run of four consecutive championship victories and Red Bull’s dominance over the sport.
Looking forward, it is hard to imagine Mercedes not being favourites to claim the title again, with the rivalry between childhood friends Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, which had hearts in mouths throughout last season, certain to continue and perhaps even intensify. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo will hope to improve on his incredibly impressive driving from 2014, which saw him win all three races not claimed by Hamilton or Rosberg. Although pre-season testing results can often be misleading, it is clear that Ferrari have made some serious headway in their car’s development since last season and, with a new driver’s team of world champions Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonnen, they will be hoping to push Mercedes all the way to the line. Williams’ Valtteri Botta and Felipe Massa will aim to build on their remarkable 2014 season and challenge for both the championships, which have eluded them since their miraculous double in 1997. The beauty of this sport is its unpredictability and, with an upset always just around the corner, it really is anyone’s guess who will be crowned champion in Abu Dhabi on 29th November.
